The Hidden Gap in School Hygiene in Điện Biên

We used to believe that by 2026, access to basic hygiene would no longer be something children lacked anywhere. Then we arrived in Điện Biên. Over the years, schools here have become more welcoming, with new classrooms and improved facilities. Yet one essential piece is still missing: the resources children need to stay clean every day.

A 2-kilometre walk for clean water

During our field visits to boarding primary schools in Điện Biên, we witnessed children in some of the most remote communities walking nearly 2 kilometres alongside their teachers, crossing steep and slippery hills just to carry clean water back to school.

At the two schools we surveyed, even the school toilets had only been built the previous year through the support of nonprofit organizations.

When basic hygiene products become a luxury

What surprised us even more was this:

In a boarding class of around 30 students, only about five children brought their own toothbrush and toothpaste from home. Some classes—especially Grades 1 and 2—had no children at all bringing these essentials. Most students relied entirely on whatever the school could provide.

“Teacher, why don’t I smell nice like you?”

For many children in Điện Biên, simply being clean and smelling fresh is a challenge. Living away from their families at such a young age means many children have never had the opportunity to develop everyday hygiene habits. Some remember to wash their hands; others forget. Some know how to brush their teeth; others have never been taught that it is something they should do every day. Some children stay at the boarding school for five days each week with only a single change of clothes.

For many families in the highlands, the greatest priority is simply that their children can go to school, have enough to eat, and receive an education. Personal hygiene, understandably, becomes secondary—and schools are left to shoulder much of that responsibility.

Yet each school has only a handful of teachers caring for more than 300 boarding students every day. Balancing teaching, caregiving, and helping every child develop healthy hygiene habits is an enormous challenge. Limited sanitation resources also contribute to recurring outbreaks of diarrhoeal disease, which affect many schools almost every academic year.

This is why Go Clean Go School is partnering with Sính Phình 1 Primary Semi-Boarding School and Tả Phìn Primary Semi-Boarding School.

Our first step is simple: ensuring every child begins the school year with their own personal hygiene kit, so no one has to start the year without these basic essentials.

Looking further ahead, we are working together with Volunteers For Education (VFE) and two dedicated full-time volunteers who will work directly in the schools—teaching, encouraging, and helping children build healthy hygiene habits that last.

Because lasting change is not only about providing supplies. It is about giving children the knowledge, confidence, and daily support to care for themselves.

We hope that this new school year, every child will finally have the chance to feel clean, smell fresh, and grow up with dignity.
